About Les
Potter
Accredited Business Communicator Lester R. Potter, an MBA, is
Visiting Instructor in the Department of Mass Communication and
Communication Studies at Towson University, Maryland. He is a
candidate for a doctorate in Instructional Technology at Towson. At
Towson, Potter teaches Public Relations Writing, Theory of
Organizational Communication and Strategic Public Relations and
Integrated Communication, Public Relations for Nonprofit
Organizations, and Professional Communication Competencies In a
Changing Environment in the Masters program. He also serves as
Faculty Advisor to the Student PR Group comprised of PRSA and IABC
student chapters.

Potter founded LES POTTER INCORPORATED, an international
consultancy, in 1998. His firm helps organizations worldwide use
communication as a strategic management tool to boost
organizational effectiveness. For over 30 years, Les Potter has
improved business operation with innovative, results-oriented
interventions. To solve clients’ problems, Potter draws on successful
experience in organizational communication, strategic and marketing
planning, and human resources and project management gained from
work with a wide variety of organizations and industries. Les Potter’s
background includes many different and enriching business situations
that prepared him for successful client service today:
  • Potter directed Strategic Planning and Administration for Blue
    Cross and Blue Shield of the National Capital Area. He later
    coordinated nine transition teams that integrated the
    functional areas of this plan with Blue Cross Blue Shield of
    Maryland into CareFirst, Inc., a $3 billion in revenue health care
    enterprise with a customer base of 2 million and 5,000
    employees.
  • He managed Strategic Communication for Field Operations and
    Services at national headquarters of the American Red Cross.
  • He served as Director of Business Planning and Development in
    the marketing division of GHMSI, an international employee
    benefits enterprise.
  • He was a Senior Consultant with Towers Perrin, a major
    international consulting firm, where he specialized in the
    development, implementation, and evaluation of organizational
    communication strategy.
  • He served as Director of Corporate Communication for Century
    Telephone, one of the largest independent telephone and
    cellular telephone businesses.
  • He was Manager of Advertising and Public Relations for
    MobileComm, a nationwide paging and cellular telephone
    provider.
  • He was Director of Organization Development and Strategic
    Planning for MFC Services, a diversified agribusiness.

Potter was Chairman of the International Association of Business
Communicators (IABC) during 1991-92. He was named an IABC Fellow in
1997, IABC’s highest honor. He served on IABC’s executive board,
accreditation board, and as a trustee of the IABC Research
Foundation. He earned IABC accreditation (the ABC designation) in
1978.

He is the author of
The Communication Plan: The Heart of Strategic
Communication
(Second Edition), IABC's top selling manual. A Croatian
language version of this bestseller is currently being prepared in
collaboration with communication professionals and educators in
Croatia.

His second book,
Business Management for Communicators: Beyond
Strategic Communication
, helps communicators be better business
managers by understanding the principles and practice of business
administration.

Potter also wrote the chapter on strategic communication planning
for
The IABC Handbook of Organizational Communication, co-
published with Jossey-Bass in 2006.
